第1章
1
ある日の昼、私が庭でトマトに水をやっていると、友人から電話があった。
『久しぶりにみんなで山に行かないか？』
わたしはとある山岳会の会員なのだ。
私は同意し、せっせと準備を始めた。
登山当日。
登る山はロシア・サハリンの山で、標高は2156㍍
自宅は東京なので東北新幹線で青森へ、
青函トンネルをくぐる特急スーパー白鳥にのり、
函館から特急北斗、札幌でホテルに泊まった。
翌日特急スーパー宗谷で稚内へ、そして船に乗り込み出国だ。
サハリンに着きまた泊まり、次の朝、山に登り始めたのだった。

4月中旬だというのに山の頂は雪に覆われていた・・・
総勢10人の山岳会メンバーは米袋で滑って遊んでいた。
私はスーッと下のほうまで勢いあまって滑っていき、右へ左へ・・・
大きな雪の塊にぶつかってしまった。
・・・1時間ほど気を失っていたと思う。
何か大きな音で気がついた。
上のほうに向かって上り戻ったが、そこに皆はいなかった。
私の登山バック、張りかけのテント、ほかの人たちの
敗れたバック。
いったいないがあったのだろう。
私はバックの中の非常用ラジオを聞いてみた。
日本の放送がかろうじて聞こえた。
『・・・現在入ってきた情報に・・・ますと、
サハリンの山大型の熊があらわれ、登山中の日本の山岳会を襲いましたが
メンバーに怪我はありませんでした・・・が、同じ山岳会のメンバー
東京・・・区の佐藤 時雄さん63歳が行方不明です。警察では・・・』
この行方不明てのは私ではないか！
とにかくここの気温は2度ほど。暖を取らなくては凍傷になってしまう。
私はかまくらをつくり、その上に棒と服で作った旗をたてた。
これでヘリコプターに発見されるだろう・・・
私はヘリが来るのを待った。
